A new residence at Fort Direction on the South Arm peninsula, designed by 1+2 Architecture. A simple timber-clad box sits above a dark blockwork base on a sloping coastal site, with a recessed entry and vertical timber screening to the lower level. The cladding is left to silver naturally. Native planting and local stone bring the landscape up to the building.
The plan is a straightforward one, done well. An open kitchen, dining and living space runs the width of the upper level, with sliding doors on both sides so the room reads as a pavilion between the water view and a sheltered deck courtyard behind. Black joinery and a long timber-topped island anchor the kitchen; the bedrooms and bathrooms are finished in charcoal tile, timber vanities and black tapware to match. Building on an exposed coastal site meant close attention to weatherproofing, flashing and the movement of the timber cladding as it seasons, all of which is now doing exactly what it should.
